a proper shave

I recently spotted a decent deal on a shaving set from The Art of Shaving. Tonight, for the first time, I used a shaving brush and pre-shave oil, as well as an alterative shaving cream and aftershave balm. It wasn’t just the tools that were different, however. Instead of my usual foam beard and quick slashes with the razor, I took my time and didn’t force the shave. I mapped out my facial hair, brushed on a thin lather, and went to work. I’m not sure what it was, but something made me extremely happy while I did it. I recommend checking out C.O. Bigelow and The Art of Shaving to purchase the necessities. Military Wardrobe circa 1941

An excellent post on ACL featuring some great photos of vintage military uniforms. Outrageously more stylish than what we wear now. I realize BDU/ABUs may be more proficient in the field, but can’t we put the “dress” back in “dress blues?”

After a bit of a hiatus, I’ve decided to start posting again. I’m no longer in Los Angeles, as everyone who reads this knows. I am, however, back in West Virginia and happy. I’ve decided to focus more on my current style trends and day to day adventures, and less on where to get good deals. That being said, I’ll still post a link or two to keep you in the know as far as cheap threads goes.

Esquire’s 75

Esquire, one of my favorite men’s magazines, recently made a list of of the 75 albums every man should own, as well as the 75 books every man should read and 75 things every man should do. While I am interested in what the folks over at Esq. have to say, they rarely lead me astray, I am a little disheartened that the staff believes their musical tastes are universal.

My advice: Throw the lists out the window, especially the music list. Sure, it might be good to read, but decide for yourself what you like and don’t like. Everyone has a guilty pleasure when it comes to music. I for one, still have a soft spot for the teenage angst that is Brand New and Taking Back Sunday. When they randomly pop up on my shuffled playlist, the songs bring back memories and remind me of how I got where I am now. If you simply dive into a pregenerated list, you’re not getting the full experience of becoming your own person… but that’s just my $0.02.

Military Footlockers

A Time To Get recently ran a post about footlockers and their rugged, effortless style. They’re heavy, they’ve been beat up, and they look cool as hell. After reading the post, I headed straight to eBay to see how much these babies were going for, surprised to see that most were under $100, but the shipping is a killer. That being said, you could probably pick one up at a surplus store, though it won’t have that worn in look. Safest bet seems to be going to an auction or flea market. The thing about them is they have so many uses. Obviously you could use it for storage, but you could also use it as a coffee table, an end table, an ottoman, or just stack’em up in the corner for aesthetic purposes. Personally, I think I’ll pick one up and use it as a book shelf. A few pictures for your inspiration:

Sale: Old Navy

SeeJackShop pointed out that Old Navy is having a sale, and while you might not think of the store for dress clothes, their prices are low enough that you can restock on the essentials and pay for your lady’s dinner. This also brings up a point I’ve been wanting to showcase for a while. Have a look at the two hoodies, one from American Apparel, the other from Old Navy. Both are about the same color and the same fit, probably about equal quality. I’ve personally tried both on and they feel the same. There’s one major difference, other than brand. For the American Apparel version, you’re gonna dish out $45. Old Navy’s will only cost you $20.

I have a few rules that I try to adhere to while in discussion amongst friends. Don’t discuss money, religion, or politics. Speak in a manner appropriate to your surroundings. Poke fun at yourself before laughing at others.

I don’t discuss politics not because I don’t have an interest, but because people get bent out of shape about it, and in my experience, it’s hard to encourage others to understand your point of view without becoming agitated. While it is important to be informed on the policies, it’s not important to inform others of how you’ll be marking the ballot.

For me, religion falls under the cliche “actions speak louder than words.” On one hand, I do try to live in a proud manner, and follow the rules I learned in Sunday School. On the other, sometimes I fail to follow the rules and feel that if I can’t/don’t practice, I shouldn’t preach.

I prefer to avoid speaking about money because it’s boring. I hated Accounting in college. It has a time and a place, and that time is during tax season, and the place is wherever you do your taxes with whoever does them. If you do your own, you’re out of luck. Feel free to speak with a consultant, but expect to pay a handsome sum. And with good reason: because that is going to be a boring conversation. Discussing the price of things you own is done only to brag, and will only annoy those you’re speaking to. See also: your salary.

One of my pet-peeves is when people speak too loudly or not loudly enough. There is a time for a raised voice, and that time is the 5-10 seconds following a home run, goal, touchdown, or game-winning basket. Or on Sunday morning if you happen to be a Southern Baptist preacher. Don’t yell or whisper into a phone. Whisper in the library. Don’t speak once the previews have started. And lastly, if someone is sitting beside you, don’t yell.

Listen to a set from nearly any comedian and they’re sure to make a joke at their expense. Farley got laughs for being overweight, Leary recognizes he’s an ass. The point is, before you point out another’s shortcomings, you should recognize your own. If you haven’t got something nice to say, don’t say it, or at least say something equally or more discomforting about yourself beforehand. It’s always easier to do it yourself than have someone else do it for you. On a side note, laughing at someone for something they can’t help, a disease, paralysis, etc. is distastful. Laughing with someone because they’re an idiot isn’t.
